Visionary Supervisor Spotlight: Dr. Erika Johnson

We are all about celebrating amazing mental health leaders and clinical supervisors, with plans to highlight one visionary supervisor each month!

This month’s spotlight is: Dr. Erika Johnson, PsyD, LP, BC-TMH, CCATP, ACS

What types of supervision do you offer and to whom?

Individual and Group. I am an Approved Supervisor through CCE and am also specifically approved with DORA to supervise MFT. Overall, I supervise MFT-C, LPCC, and LP candidates. I also provide group and individual consultation for new clinicians, Confidential grief for seasoned and new clinicians, and those working to open a private practice.

What makes you a visionary in supervision?

Overall, I take a supervisee-centered approach in that supervision encourages self-reflection and a supervisee’s ability to see their own potential and the positive things they are providing in the field. I find this generates excitement to grow and learn as well as build confidence to reach for the goals supervisees have set for their careers. We as supervisors need to meet the supervisees where they are at with respect to how independent they can be but at the sametime, we need to trust our supervisees. I work with pre-licensed supervisees so there is ageneral acknowledgment that they can work somewhat independently without hand holding, but this population also comes with complex areas of focus that occur when someone istransitioning from school to independent work. So, my approach has a major focus on thesupervisee as a whole, not just paperwork, modalities, and techniques, but the supervisee as ahuman, the need for self-care, self-compassion, and work/life balance.

What is your favorite thing about providing clinical supervision?

Seeing the excitement new clinicians have for all the possibilities in their career. I also love to watch the transition supervisees often take from hesitant and insecure to self-assured and confident in their practice.
