What Do I Need to Supervise an LPCC?

I’ve heard I need to meet certain requirements to supervise Licensed Professional Counselor Candidates (LPCCs) in Colorado. What are they?

DORA decided to set parameters for anyone wanting to supervise LPCCs, which went into effect 9/1/2021. Anyone, including LMFTs, LSCWs, and PsyDs, in addition to LPCs, need to meet these minimum requirements to supervise LPCCs in Colorado. *Other designations may have additional requirements for providing supervision.

 

The requirements include:

1) 3,000 hours of clinical experience post Master’s degree

2) A minimum of 6 hours of Clinical Supervision Training

3) A clinical disclosure statement provided to all supervisees

 

Why is the minimum training 6 hours in clinical supervision?

 

As Khara attended some of the decision-making meetings remotely in 2020, it was her understanding that DORA was trying to set a professional standard without eliminating folks from the pool of supervisors by making the training criteria too high, time-intensive, or costly. Based on DORA’s final decisions, you have three options to meet the clinical supervision training criteria required by DORA as of 9/1/2021 and beyond:

 

1) Complete an Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) course of 45 hours

2) Complete 6 contact hours of clinical supervision training (any combination of courses as long as clinical supervision focused).

3) Complete 2 semester hours of clinical supervision training in a graduate school program.

 

How do I notify DORA that I’m providing supervision?

 

When you renew your license every two years, you will attest that you meet criteria to provide clinical supervision. For the 2021 renewal, this was a checkbox attesting to compliance. Future renewal cycles, including August 2023 may have a more thorough process beyond attestation.

 

How many hours of continued education in supervision must I have?

 

For LPCC supervisors, 3.0 hours of continued education are required every 2 year license renewal cycle, with the next cycle here in August 2023.
