Four Reasons Continued Education is Encouraged as a Clinical Supervisor
It’s a new year which means another opportunity to continue your growth as a mental health leader and supervisor! Although you may have already worked hard to secure your training and competencies for clinical supervision in the past, there are multiple reasons to pursue continued education in the present!
1. Trainings Become Outdated
You may be shocked to hear that some of the training materials on clinical supervision are grossly outdated. We’re talking models more than 15+ years old! Recognizing that there may be new techniques, challenges, models, or strategies worth exploring, it could be a good idea to research what’s being offered now in clinical supervision training.
2. It’s Required for Your Licensure
This may be the top reason why clinical supervisors pursue continued education. It’s required! Are you aware of the parameters in your state and for your license? For instance, Colorado Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisors are required to complete 6 contact hours of training to demonstrate competency, effective 2021, followed by 3 contact hours each license renewal cycle (2 years).
3. You’re Never Done Learning
If you’re like Christina and myself, we enjoy learning! With new ideas and processes coming to the forefront each year as a reflection of our world and it’s mental health needs, why wouldn’t you embrace opportunities to learn new material and connect with fellow supervisors?
4. Shifting Generations of Therapists
Last but not least, how confident do you feel working with the youngest generation of professionals entering the field? More likely than not, these clinicians will be engaging in your leadership and supervision as they move towards licensure. Do you want to feel more confident when serving this population? Continued education could help you feel prepared to work with a diverse caseload of supervisees!
