Five FAQs from LPC Supervisors in Colorado

With changes going in effect 9/1/2021, we’ve received lots of questions about DORA’s changes for LPC and LPCC supervision. Although we don’t represent DORA or speak for them, we do our best as clinical supervisors and leaders to help our community feel confident and in-the-know about these changes.

Here are five FAQs we’ve answered a lot this year!

How do I apply for the LPC-S Credential?

DORA decided to not enforce a credential for supervision, but rather three criteria. It’s our understanding that Professionals who meet this criteria are in good standing with DORA to provide clinical supervision to LPCCs. That criteria includes:

1) 3,000 hours of clinical experience

2) Clinical Supervision Training

3) A Clinical Disclosure statement provided to all supervisees

What kind of clinical supervision training do I need?

You have three options to meet the clinical supervision training criteria required by DORA 9/1/2021 and beyond:

1) Complete an ACS course of 45 hours

2) Complete 6 contact hours of clinical supervision training

3) Complete 2 semester hours of clinical supervision training in a graduate school program.

How do I notify DORA that I’m providing supervision?

When you renew your license every two years, you will attest that you meet criteria to provide clinical supervision. For the 2021 renewal, this was a checkbox attesting to compliance. Future renewal cycles may have a more thorough process.

How many hours of continued education in supervision must I have?

For LPC supervisors, 3 hours of continued education are required every 2 year license renewal cycle.

Where do I find clinical supervision trainings?

A google search could be a good place to start. Also check out professional organization websites. Supervisionary’s on-demand video training opportunities for continued education can be found here!
