Visionary Supervisor: Josephine Ampaw-Greene

We are all about celebrating amazing mental health leaders and clinical supervisors, with plans to highlight one visionary supervisor each month!

This month’s spotlight is: Josephine Ampaw-Greene, LCSW, MFTC, MA

What types of supervision do you offer and to whom?

I provide individual supervision to social workers (LSWs and SWCs) and professional counselors (LPCCs) with a focus on Identity Based and Relationship Trauma. We focus on the ways that intersectionality and the systemic oppression of our world impact every part of their lives and hence impact their mental health.

Along with individual supervision, I also collaborate with my colleague, Lena McCain, to provide group supervision for Social Workers and Professional Counselors (SWCs, LSWs, LPCCs). I also provide professional consultation to other colleagues on a case by case basis on course/workshop development, private practice development, and clinical consultation on cases!

What makes you a visionary in supervision?

I'm a firm believer that every mental health therapist should always be on the lookout for ways to learn and grow. It's all about seeing our clients and their healing journeys through a lens that's both anti-oppressive and anti-discriminatory, taking into account all the different parts of who they are. Because, let's face it, our clients bring a lot to the table, and it's crucial for us to have the right tools to meet them where they're at, in a way that's respectful and understanding.

When it comes to clinical supervision and consultation, I like to keep things open and inclusive. As a supervisor, it's my job to create a space where we can talk about everything - from my own professional experiences to how they intersect with the identities my supervisees bring into the room. And while we're honing those important clinical skills, I make sure we're also looking at the bigger picture, seeing our work and client relationships from a humanizing perspective.

With my background in education and social work, I bring evidence-based teaching methods to the table, making sure our supervision sessions are not only productive but also supportive of your growth as a therapist.

A passion and deep desire of mine is to ensure that new therapists and therapists that are wanting to make adjustments in their careers are equipped with the necessary resources to succeed. After providing many hours of supervision, I have found that folks (especially pre licensed folks) tend to feel like they have so many questions about navigating their careers along with their clinical skil. Because of this, I decided to start The Mental Health Therapist Hub. It is a passion project of mine where I focus on compiling and creating resources that I wish I had in the beginning of my career and in times of transition in my career. If you are interested in seeing these resources, we launched in August of this year and the site is:

What is your favorite thing about providing clinical supervision?

My favorite part about providing clinical supervision is seeing the progression and growth my supervisees make. As they experience their AHA moments and lean more deeply into trusting their clinical decision making, I always feel a sense of joy and accomplishment when they build strength as clinicians as a people. A part of these AHA moments tends to be when supervisees realize the strength of their intersectional identities and lived experiences. In this, they are further empowered to lean more deeply to modalities that align with those parts of themselves along with their clinical wisdom!
